Eat to Live, Live to Eat
BLOB! is a unique multiplayer game about... well... blobs. Each player becomes a blob oozing around the play field for food. Blobs eat food to grow but shrink gradually over time and eventually die. The last blob alive is the winner!
How do I get in on the action?
When you first connect to a game of BLOB! you are a spectator. A spectator can only watch the game and chat by using the say command. To join the waiting list for the next round, type join on the command line or click join in the commands panel.
The game host starts the game by using the start command. After the host selects a playing field, all players in the waiting list become a blob and the scramble for food begins.
How do I move this crazy thing?
Blobs are very simple organisms with very little motor control. You do not directly control the movement of your blob's body! Each player controls the nerve center of their blob, represented by a pair of eyes on the blob.
The blob body will attempt to toward the space immediately in front of the eyes. Blob parts can only move near other parts of the same blob. If a piece gets left behind, the player will have to come back for it or suffer without that bit.
Your nerve center (the eyes) can only move within it's blob body. To move toward a particular area, move to the edge of your body and keep looking in the direction you want to go. Your body will try to move in front of you so you may continue to move forward.
Food!
Food comes in a wide variety depending on the playing field the host chooses. When a part of a blob body moves over a food item, it will absorb the food and start digesting it. The food will be visible inside the blob section. Each section of your body can only digest one item at a time. If it encounters more food while it is digesting, that section will slide harmlessly over the food.
Some things that blobs consider "food" will move around, making it more difficult for the hungry blob to catch it.
Blob Battles
Blobs will even try to eat each other if they get too close. When this happens, parts of each blob will try to absorb parts of the other blob. They will continue trying to consume each other until one or the other is eaten. Blob cores can not move into a part that is fighting.
What's so special about the host?
The host is the person who is nice enough to share his or her computer power and network bandwidth to let you play. You should always treat your game host with respect. "That *#$!^ isn't worthy of my respect!" you say? Then don't play on their server. It's their property. Like it or leave it. Having that out of the way, it would be a very good idea if you find someone to host that has a faily powerful computer and fast connection speeds to be the game host.
The host has three special abilities in a game of blobs. They are the only player who can select the number of blobs in a round, start a round, or boot blobs from the game.
How many players?
The host may use the players command to choose the number of blobs in the next round. There may be between 2 and 8 players in a BLOB! match. If there aren't enough players in the waiting list, computer controlled blobs will pad out the rest of the available positions.
Let the games begin!
The host starts the game by using the start command. A list of available play fields will pop up over the game display. When the host clicks on a playing field, a new round begins. The host may close the popup window without selecting a play field.
Booting Blobs
Sadly, not everyone is mature enough to play a blob. The host may boot troublesome players with the boot command.
The host may also boot computer controlled blobs to end a round prematurely. If the host accidently activates the boot command but does not want to boot anyone, he or she may select their own name from the list to cancel. (Normally I would add a cancel option, but I had to make some sacrifices to keep BLOB! under 4K.)
If the player keeps returning to cause trouble, the host can use the pager ban feature to lock the player out of the game. To pager ban, click the "pager" button on the Dream Seeker client. It should be right above this window. Then click the "bans" button, select "add" and type the name of the troublesome player. Make sure the name appears in the list, then boot the player. They will not be able to join the game again.
Thank you!
Thanks for playing BLOB! Survival of the Fattest. I hope you have a great time!
