I like the leg stance better in the new one. I'm not sure what you're trying to get across with the line at the top of the legs, though, as if to separate them from the rest of the body.

I'd suggest trying to give him an outline, maybe a black one, and see how it looks. Either way, I still definitely think you should work on a light-source, especially with a sprite this big.

The shoulders look really big. It also looks like he's tucking his chin down, kinda like this. The head is drawn in a perspective like we're looking down at it, we see the top of the head and the eyes but the nose and mouth are crammed into just a few pixels. The rest of the body looks as though we're viewing it front-on.
You still have a lot of pillow shading.
I certainly hope the mobs will have clothes in the game so the shading on the base icon won't be very important.
Looks good. Time to start creating the actual game.
