Not a bug
BYOND Version:499
Operating System:Windows 8 64-bit
Web Browser:Firefox 23.0
Applies to:BYOND Pager
Status: Not a bug

This is not a bug. It may be an incorrect use of syntax or a limitation in the software. For further discussion on the matter, please consult the BYOND forums.
Descriptive Problem Summary:</b Th nature of the issue is that WD software for external HDDs, particularly WD Smartware, conflicts with the networking of Byond itself, mainly the pager and connecting to servers.

Trying to connect to the Byond pager partially "works", but it reports that the "Byond hub is currently unreachable" and that the pager loses its majority of features because of this. The hub pages for games fail to retrieve the servers and connecting to servers is a hit-and-miss, lately more a miss than anything.

Trying to validate a key for the first time is also 99% a failure, the first try causing it to attempt to do so for 5+ minutes and then failing and any subsequent attempts fail almost immediately, requiring one to delete the BYOND folder entirely to attempt cleanly again.

This is relevant for Byond version 499.1202 (the latest version as of September 6, 2013).

The nature of the networking problems are confirmed as forcefully closing the processes dealing with WD software resolves the issue, whereas it doesn't appear to by any antivirus or firewall software or the router's firewall system.

Numbered Steps to Reproduce Problem:
1. Install the WD software from either the WD external HDD or from the website.
2. Update the WD software to the most recent version.
3. Restart the computer.
4. Attempt to connect to your Byond key via the Byond pager.

Expected Results:
Connecting to the Byond pager should yield a full connection with no conflicts with any other ports used by other software.

Actual Results:
Likely a port conflict used by the WD software that checks for updates conflicting with the port used by Byond's pager.

Does the problem occur:
Every time, upon trying to open the Byond pager.
All games seem to be generally conflicted as it deals with connecting to a server via the pager
All user accounts.

When does the problem NOT occur?
When the WD-related processes are forcefully closed and attempting to reconnect to the Byond pager.

Workarounds:
Warning: This affects you if you rely on WD's software for auto-unlocking one of their external HDDs, or continuous backup via WD Smartware.
1. Open Task Manager.
2. Scroll down the processes list to "WD [...]".
3. End any and all of the WD-related processes.
4. Close the Byond pager completely.
5. Re-open the Byond pager for a full, compelte, successful connection.
I don't see that this is something we can deal with. I would highly recommend you report this problem to Western Digital. If their software is messing with BYOND, it's messing with other network programs too. If it's merely a matter of it hogging the network (you can check on your network stats to see), there may be a simple config setting on their software that you can change. It might be trying to max out your upload bandwidth, making meaningful two-way communication impossible.
It sees that might be the case, since I've noticed there were networking issues with Garry's Mod and now with the WD software closed, there aren't. You can close the case if you want.
