what does that mean exactly?

do I have to move all my files to another server or what?
if that is the case, where should I put them?

Is the free hosting, gone?

Id like to know too. However, hosting is really cheap, common 4 dimes a day? The only problem is I dont have a job and my parents dont hand me out money, i just asked and b4 the sentence was finished she said no. I have a couple friends who might host my games tho. Or maybe a friend of a friend if im lucky.

I can't afford that either!

However I would like to hear about this from some kind of official.

They said something about having a "launch pad" service that's free. I suppose they're putting it on the new 'polaris' server (the dantom hosting was not), but you don't get the nice stuff that the pay hosting gives you.

BYOND can serve your webpage! What more could you possibly desire? ...Hmm, I can see it now, actually... BYOND ISP. =)

If you're willing to join up with someone, you can share hosting costs, you know. All you need to do is create a key amongst yourselves (like 'Kaidorin Enterprises') then share the payment; every so often, your friend transfers a few dimes over and you pay for it (or vice versa).

Maybe if Dan's as adept of a programmer as I think he is (the first Dantom individual I encountered in BYONDUNG, just after Tom left for his "business trip" in his Europe soirée =), he can actually instate some code that allows shared hosting costs automatically. Of course, I'll leave that up to him to decide.

Well, let's just pretend that I'm an official. Done and done. =)

Don't forget that you can host games completely for free just by running them on your own machine!

yep me too. well actually i have a lan internet connection becuase my parents share the interent connection with me, and they wont keep their comp on all the time, and my mom tends to shutdown the computer ever 1/6 a minute, on the 1/6 of the minute.
Sorry about that! I did not intend to take the old "dantom" host offline before moving everyone over to the new "launch-pad" service. That was a mess-up on my part.

We are just taking this moment to reorganize the way the hosting works. You mentioned that it would not be possible for you to pay for a site. Well, don't worry! There are plenty of alternatives.

For starters, we are offering a startup package called Blast Off BYOND. You get a month of free hosting plus BYONDimes that would cover the cost of 3 additional months. All you have to do is submit a working game. (And for those of you who already have uploaded games to the old "dantom" server, I am currently in the process of automatically doing this for you.)

Ok, you say, but what about after the four months are up? Am I going to have to pay?! Well, yes. (We have to pay for the host machine, not to mention put in all the time and effort to keep it going, when we would rather be adding features to BYOND.) However, there are several alternatives to paying money out of your own pocket.

You could go with a purely distributed system. That means you upload your game in a zip file to the BYOND Hub. We can afford to run that for free, because it doesn't eat up any of our CPU, just a bit of bandwidth. Players will be able to easily connect to your game by entering the URL
seeker://hub:1234
, where 1234 is replaced by the hub id of your game. (Actually, they can just click on it in the hub, so they don't really need to type in anything.)

If distributing the game doesn't work for you (or if you want to charge a fee for downloading the game and you still want a free version for people to connect to), you will need a site, and yes, it costs money (2 dimes per day for the launch-pad). However, you will have 4 months to scheme up a system for getting users to help you cover the costs.

One such scheme, which I already mentioned, is to charge a fee for downloading the game. Then people can run it on their own machine and host parties with their friends or whoever joins them through the hub. We will be adding features to the hub to allow you to easily do that in the next couple of days.

Another scheme is to accept BYONDime payments directly from within the game or through BYOND Shop. There are countless creative ways to do that, including just asking for donations. (Never hurts to try!)

Basically, the point I want to get across here is that we are on your side. We don't want to discourage creative game authors by heaping unecessary fees on your heads. But we have to cover our costs too. (And if you think your costs are bad, you should see ours!)

In the long run, this way of doing things will be more profitable for all of us. We intend to make BYOND a great source of wacky, fun, and inexpensive games written by free-lance authors. The primary reason for writing a game should be for the fun of it, but we think it adds to the fun to have a little element of profit potential thrown in. This is the Internet, after all. You never know what might hit it big.

--Dan of Dantom (official!)

p.s. I have just now finished creating your new launch-pad site. Try it out at byond://Kaidorin/Sumo! Note how you now have your own byond sub-domain (ie with your name first). Pretty click!

Ok , one thing I could do is charge for like having over 3 or 4 characters, but would this be legal since I have a dragonball z game?

You'd have to find out from the people who own the tademark.

But, judging from the skills you have, I would strongly suggest making something totally original, so there is no question of ownership. It's always nice to be in complete control.

This caught my eye because it's one of the things I've considered for Cerulea. But I'm worried it would be hard to enforce... when it's cheaper to just use a second key than to get another character on your current key, players will do the first. Even if they have to lie a little. I suppose we could always use cookies...

I was going to have log IPs whenever a new key signed on. It would keep a file of a list of keys and the ip address. If the person tried to log in with another key from the same ip address it would know and tell them to use the other key. They they would be forced upon making a new character through that key. The only problem is for the people who's ip address keep changing :(.

You could make it even more clever, and create a new mob with the mob.key set to their original key, which would transfer the client over, and then they'd be none the wiser.

Hopefully Dantom'll put up a key limit sometime soon.

I didn't write that =), but you do have a point. Why don't you ask your ISP to make an exception in your case? I'm fairly certain, as long as you've been steady in your payments, that they wouldn't be too objective to it. You HAVE been steady in your payments, right? =)

I'm not an extreme expert on networks, but I think that's possible.

(Sure, I know Ethernets come in star, linear bus, or tree topologies, and that they transfer at 10 Mbps (with Fast Ethernet transferring at 100 Mbps over a Category 5 copper wire cable), but I don't know the difference between the software to set it up and a pebble in my shoe. =)

Opps, sorry Spuzzum... =) Well, I live with my parents and I'm sure they've been steady on their payments, but they'll have to deal with the firewall in which I think they'd not like my wonderful idea of it... hehehe.
