You know that blackness on your map before you put any icons on it? Well that's a blank area. The only way to make it not black is to overide it.

Well I've never seen that before, it's really annoying, and it just started doing it for no reason... how would I go about overriding that?

You can only change it's icon and maybe rename it to "".

Areas are always there. In fact, they are always there in a way that not even turfs are! When I implemented my atomic num system for a project of mine, I discovered that all areas have an atomic num of 0... which means that they are never new, and therefore never call atom.New()! Do learn to love them.
