I've been working on some things recently, and made map files as big as 1,000 x 4,000 X 5 tiles, that's 20 million tiles!!! I was just curious as to how large most of the other people's big maps were?
It's too bad DM won't go above 1,000 x 1,000 x 1,000 or I might have believed you.

(multiple map files) they teleport between maps, guess it doesn't count though, does it?

Why not just say 1000x1000x20 then? :oP (I don't believe you either.)

[Edit]
Of course, I could randomly generate a map that size in a few minutes... But it wouldn't be very good! The Ensya map was, realistically speaking, about 250x250x2. It took me weeks to put that together... Mapping is, in fact, a lot of work. If you made a map that was 1000x1000x20, It must be a pretty sad looking map. Unless it's the only project you've been working on since you started BYOND.

i was planning on the 1000 X 4000, hadn't done it yet. (just bragging) had to pull my ass out of the fire, don't know why I even posted, now time to bump up a few more posts above this one...

You have to read my edit first :oP

or you have a LOT of ocean... which it does, most of that map is underground tunnels, it takes me 20 minutes to put together a good looking map of about the size of 500 X 500, and it's taken me 3 days to get half of my current prodject's stuff done.
I think there's other ways to measure map size than simply counting tiles... HRH has approximately 50,000 tiles of pre-generated map that have been played on, but the world "feels" much bigger than some of my larger game maps, like the LexyMUD one that was 250x250 (62,500 tiles)... it's actually possible to get lost, or walk really close to something a hundred times and never see it. I know there's features on the tested maps that no one (aside from myself) has seen, and some that only a few people have found. If I add more details to the existing maps, it would enhance this effect further.

yes, I like games like that, that have some playability, I really DID like HRH, but found it frustrating that I couldn't log in all the time. but oh well, I don't need to become addicted.

I make my maps with private areas that only I can get to, so I can have a place to relax, while I monitor other peoples' behavior, most of the time, I allow my buddy, Majar to access these places as well, but I sometimes prefer to be alone.

I had an idea a month back, where if anyone besides myself tried to do anything or pick up any objects inside of my hideouts, they would automatically be teleported out. I also had this idea to make like a FBI headquarters thing, where if you got more than 10 feet from your escort, you would be 'disposed of'.

What kind of "features" are you refering to? While I probably missed some of each section, I'm pretty sure I've explored the entire HRH map. But then, I probably wouldn't know if I found something interesting if I passed right in front of it. What really is there to find besides trees, rocks, grass and water?

Oh, and as for the map stuff, the difference is just like comparing a wide open box to a maze. For whatever reason, the maze seems bigger, and it's a whole lot more daunting to cross a maze of 250x250 squares than it is to walk across an open 250x250 square box. Tanks has the same effect. Even though it's played on an extremely small map (50x50), it stills seems huge and is relatively easy to get lost in.

Really? only 50 x 50? I could have sword it was like 100 X 100!

Same goes for Haven, and even Evolution of Eternity. Small maps, stacked end-to-end, grossly exaggerate the size of the map. (Seems as though HRH uses 50x50 maps, if I'm not mistaken.)

I've only made three 100x100 maps for EoE (that's 30,000 tiles, a lot being inaccessible to the player), and the game seems utterly huge. (Of course, each 100x100 map took me well over 3 hours of solid work to make. Detail goes a long way when making maps of smaller sizes that connect to each other...)

I think building smaller maps is easier on the builder, too :oP For some reason, it's easier to think up neat stuff to put in a 50x50 section, than it is to think of neat stuff to put in a 250x250 square section (like Ensya).

Although, I'm still wondering how large the Ensya (desert) map seemed to most people... (62,500 tiles)

"Freedom is living in a cage larger than you care to fly across." I felt completely free in Ensya. :)

41x41... for reasons of processor sanity, I never want anyone or anything in a region to be more than 20 squares from the center point.

You'd feel much more free if you had an Administration gem, ah, I loved that gem, and my green flamey smiley.. I wish Xooxer'd come back and host Ensya.
In response to Nadrew
If I were capable of hosting now (Stupid cable!) I'd probably rebuild it. Most of what it was I made back when I only had a month's experience or so, so it should be relatively easy to rebuild with all kinds of nifty features.

I just don't have any good reason to do it :oP

Mapping in Ensya was fun though, since the more I mapped, the more places people had to build houses.
In response to Foomer
Once I find a DSL provider near me I'll host it for you, I'm raking in the big bucks now, and finally have enough for it, problem is there's not a provider near me.

I could never get out of the desert, I remember floating through some corners of buildings, then ending up there and exploring. I never, ever, ever, ever, could find my way back, I searched for like an hour and a half until I finally gave up. It seemed pretty large to me ;).

Ah. Seems closer to 50 even to the educated eye ("I'm nothing if not immodest!" -Z), so I guess that's a good testimonial for the size exaggeration right there. ;-)

(Makes sense, given the burrow sizes...)
