It's kind of ironic in those types of animes, that these games say they're mimicking, I rarely see just plane open spaces- half the fights involve scenery being destroyed/in the way.

Especially Naruto where half the fight scenes I've scene take place in clustered forests.

I'll take you up on your challenge though, I'd like to see this faced paced battle system you've made that requires luxurious open spaces.

Hell open spaces aren't really a bad thing, if they look good. That's what it really comes down to, and half the time unless it's supposed to be a barren desert, large open spaces of nothing but the same is usually boring.

Can you provide screenshots of your map- so people have context?
Look at the old maps in MLaaS. I did more there in a 50x50 area than I have done in most other BYOND action rpgs.

It's all about the avatar's size the player has and how their transitions between maps work. Other than that the map editor updater is a bit slow the more you add to a fully sized map.
