I have to admit the spinning BYOND logo emoticon surprised me.

You can add your own emoticons in Pidgin. That person added that to their list. Pidgin does not contain that icon by default.

It was Gaim, not gAIM or GAIM.

MSN has the ability for custom emoticons, that person just set the byond icon to show instead of the text. Which explains why you're seeing it. You can chose not to view them in the Accounts Editors advanced tab for each MSN account you have.
