As your speed increases there is less delay between each step. So delay is invesle proportonal to speed. But is that realy true? If so what should I times it by? Would it work better and be more realistic using the inverse square law?

Yes, quite obviously.

There isn't any inverse square law related to speed and delay, just a regular old inverse. An inverse square is used for things like gravity and illumination.
