Just a thought but, I feel like allowing the user base upvote feature requests could let you the developers see what is most important to the people who are dedicated to the engine.

They don't really care what we think is most important, nor should they. Honestly, most people here have really poor ideas and shouldn't be allowed to have influence over what gets done, because most of those people won't use/know how to use what it is they're voting to add. I see it being annoying and highly abused. I think the '++/+1' comment method works just the same anyway, not like it determines what gets done by any means.
We actually did have feature voting at one point, but it ended up being way less useful than we thought.

Although I'm not a big fan of the +1 posts, I do have to say that keeping a feature thread near the top and unread at least encourages commentary by keeping it fresh. Even better is when someone can contribute a useful idea for implementation (when applicable).
