Well, I have a good friend who is trying to develop a free Everquest type game and asked me if I knew any programmers up to the task of an engine. I laughed in his face. However, he has some really good ideas and is a great artist so, I decided to try to help him out. If anyone knows of any suitable multiplayer 3d engines out there, I would be willing to try to hack them to work. I thought about QuakeC, but realized it has too many internal limitations.

There's a few in development out there that I've run across but I have no idea how to create a game from them. Here's some links. There's many more than this, but this should give you a good start. AltaVista with keywords of +3d +engine can pull up more.
