I'll never be able to take Drake seriously. I think it was Chris Hardwick who aptly described him as having "resting cry face".

Drake is easily one of the best of this generation along with J-Cole and Logic. One mistake people make when listening to rap is they make conclusions based their songs that are played on the radio. A lot of rappers, including Drake, have made note in their songs that they have to dumb songs down so that it'll be mainstream. Rap is a mixture of making songs for the sole purpose of being a hit and getting a ton of views, and then making songs where you get to talk more seriously about your life.

The highest amount of views Closer To My Dreams has ever gotten on YT was 10 million, and that was 7 years ago. Hotline Bling dropped 1 month ago and already has 229 million. This is how the industry works. If you listen to their entire albums and not just the songs that everyone tweets about, you'll see that a lot of these artists are very articulate and have more to talk about than ass and titties.
Well informed.

No one takes us seriously till we're rich.
Rap hasn't existed since 1991.

Eminem begs to differ.

I said it right the first time.

The thing that's called rap nowadays isn't rap, but something that spawned from it and was never good enough (in aggregate) to be given a better name.

That's a terrible approach to it. Don't Sweat The Technique by Eric B. & Rakim didn't even come out until 1992, while Mos Def's Black on Both Sides didn't come out until 99. I'm not as well-versed in hip-hop as other genres, but if be incredulous of any Best 90s Hip Hop Albums lists that failed to include those two at a high ranking.

Two of my other favorite hip hop artists, Aesop Rock and Brother Ali, didn't even start recording music until the late 90s and early 2000s, respectively.

Just because you only like a narrow region and are either unwilling or unable to travel outside your comfort zone doesn't mean the rest of the world stopped existing. Don't be thick.

[Edit]

Another great album, Illmatic, only came out in 94
When genres change and their names don't, it's a disservice to the language. I'd be okay with anyone who claimed true rock ceased to exist in the '70s, and the formats that claimed the title should be called something else. (I'd say that something else would be better, but that at least is more of an opinion.)
@Lummox:

70's rock didn't even die in the 70s.

Most of the popular sounds that are being hailed as a resurrection of the new rock are basically retreading the ground the Doors opened up when they first brought the blues to the masses repackaged in a southern-influenced americanized darkening of underground British rock. See groups like the Black Keys for further evidence of the 70s living on.

And yeah, as for the rap scene, if you are only paying attention to the people that get mainstream play, you are missing out.

Music's about the offbeat and the genres have been changing. What you call rap is probably from the golden days of hip-hop, and not actually rap. Most of the rock you know isn't really rock. It's metal, alt, or progressive. The rock that people refer to in the golden days was either blues rock or southern rock. These days, the newer genres are calling themselves metal. Blues rock is making a comeback as blues metal, southern rock is making a comeback as southern metal.

Sounds change. Just don't expect the radio to give you anything but the most simple and nonthreatening breed of mindless crap that's out there.

The true test of an artist's legacy is when they are able to transcend the barriers of the status quo and can write music that is rhythmically compelling, lyrically complex and emotionally satisfying.

Can we just point out that baroque is still being played today mostly by metal bands, but also everyone if you trust
