This may sound oddly specific, but could we have an appearance flag to remove one of the triangles of the quad normally used for rendering sprites?
You can use a transform matrix to construct an arbitrary triangle, but since all we have to work with are quads, you end up with a nasty "mirrored" triangle along one of the edges. If you apply a triangle-shaped texture you then end up with a nasty jagged edge.
