Hello Readers. I hope that you are enjoying/will be enjoying the spring break and Easter holiday as they approach. We do have a holiday themed game featured this week (OK, so it's Christmas related, but that's close enough) along with plenty of other features that don't require looking for eggs, baskets or that clingy plastic grass!

PopisFizzy started up a thread for users to share what non-BYOND developments they are working on. I can say with complete certainty that despite having only 15 posts, that BYOND thread contains the single most number of words and phrases that I don't understand, and that's excluding the words that are a part of PopisFizzy's developing language.

BYOND

Lummox JR released a new version of BYOND 510 tonight, with more bug fixes for the new map rendering system. Two weeks ago, Lummox JR made some changes to vars by flattening them, gaining some performance boosts, he also made considerations for objects in cases where the new map chucking system differs from the old map rendering process. Last week, he reached the conclusion of adding a new appearance flag called TILE_BOUND. He then put some effort into informing the Webclient on how to handle big icons, which should be further reflected in tonight's release. Holiday site theme's briefly popped-up on his radar, so keep an eye out for that possibility in the future.

BYOND Games

Many of the major branches of Space Station 13 have been taking advantage of one of the additions of BYOND 510, the tick_usage variable. Simply put, it allows the game to let client responsiveness take precedents over game code processing. In other's words, this addition removes lag, creates a much more enjoyable playing environment, and allows expansion on systems that otherwise would have required too high of a resource demand, virtually allowing mass destruction without hesitation. My only concern is that I will now have nothing to blame my mistakes on!

Epoch, the final sequel (or prequel?) in the Epic saga launched on Steam Greenlight yesterday, and has already gained enough positive votes to be 50% of the way to the top 100 games, but needs your support, so check out the demo and give it a well-deserved vote or purchase. Yutput does development streams regularly on his twitch account, check that out as well!

The Pixel Realms development team is back with another monthly update on the progress of Severed World. This month, the focus was on elements in association. The first two features have to do with the associations made by players in guilds, and how they can compete against one another and claim the spoils of war. The next feature explains how groups of servers work together to make Severed World massive. Finally the last major feature touches on the array of menu options and buttons. Amazing work!

Thanks to a few updates from Skysaw and the persistence of Nadrew, My Life as a Spy is now able to accept gold subscriptions again. The forums are back up and running from a 2008 backup. The Luna update remains on hold while waiting on hardware shipping from China, but refreshed saves and contests for rare items is on the itinerary when the mailman comes looking for a signature.

Soma Schicksal released the developments that have been made to Tales of Judgement R over the course of the past two weeks. The adventure RPG has more menus, options, and quick selection slots now. Full screen real estate is being utilized, and medal and trophies can now be viewed, including those earned in other games by Mana productions.

Land of Fire is really pressing out the artwork in their latest development logs. With the Big icon issues out of the way, they have been looking into creating hand crafted maps versus the repetitive tile based approach we have all become accustom to. Scary bad guys with freaky masks have been drawn, and while the team has been avoiding spoiling the story, they have been releasing previews of some of the dialogue and enemy battles. They have also hired a musician, with previews of his work in the #15 devlog.

Yutput spent the past two weeks creating Aetherune Tournament, a unique turned based strategy game that uses decks and cards to select spells. When in battle, tiles are captured for generating mana, and spells are used to take down the opposing players. Ranked, AI, and draft matches are available for play, and the game makes complete usage of on-screen elements.

Bosses are in on the largest remake of Feed yet, a action zombie shooter by Kumorii. The first one is the Doppleganger, a player-look alike who could make matters ... complicated in multiplayer situations. It's also the first enemy who can wield a gun. When the boss is defeated, players will get a short cut-scene of his death. Air strike beacons are in for when you're overrun, and the SK-47 joins the arsenal as well.

Like he mentioned in his BYOND vision, Poplava has been working on a tabletop card game simulator. Fast forward to more recent times, and he has shared a four minute narrated video demonstrating the flexibility of his simulator. Some of the features include panning and rotating around the viewport, making multiple tables at the same time, and moving pieces around. Support for card tables, poker tables, and checkerboards are displayed.

Flame guardian has been sharing his progress on Radical Combat Dudes on Twitter this past week. Dungeons, oceans, and city scenes have shown the style of the sidescroller. Player vs Player is going to be a big focus for the game, and with weapons like the rocket launcher flying around, it's going to get crazy fast.

Tentatively named the tracker, Bravo1 showed off a new enemy. This one is a floating ball that spawns lightning when the rover gets too close. A few hits will take it down, but the new boss will take a few more. When the vile plant finally comes down, it will open up a long forgotten part of the cave system.

Hamster Havok was created by Kozuma3, a causal game that has similarity to bomberman, and rodents. Up to five players use bombs to blow holes in their environment, collecting powerups along the way, then using their bombs, navigation skills, and foresight to blow up their enemies, while dodging the blasts of placed bombs.

W3SL3Y1SM3SSY showed a few screenshots of Pixelatia, an RPG that he has been working on as of late. The screenshots show several hub features, such as item information and inventory control. In the text, he briefly explains the turn-based combat, skills, and crafting.

Tempestous Heart fills us in on the recent advancements in Swords and Souls Online. First up is a display of the psychedelic character creation (login required) and skill point allocation screens. A skill building model and a class is then selected, which will decide what combos players will be able to do with proper keystrokes. When the battle is over, a handful of non-combat skills are available to be trained. Applications for joining the team are now being accepted.

Estek Emprise was released recently by Taint_thewizard. It's an RPG with monsters, stats, bosses, and treasures just waiting to be found. There is currently a demo available on the hub.

Vegeta ssjj2 put together a brief devlog of the improvements in Lost Magic recently. Fireballs have been added for mages aligned with the fire trait, Admin verbs have been added, and we may even get a chance to see what the new player icon looks like in the next development share.

Krampuskarten by Manio is now live and ready to be played. So grab a few friends and check it out. One of you will be selected as Krampus, while the rest are tasked with trying to survive the night. Once one has been taken down in chains, they will become a member of the anti-claus's army, maybe as a Clown or Teddy Bear.

BYOND Resources

  • Help your players formally manage their associations by using Zagros5000's Simple Guild Library.
  • If you've checked out the lagless version of Space Station 13 and want to do the same with your game, Check out MrStonedOne's tutorial on how to effectively use world.tick_usage.
Whoo! (:
nice
^_^ Good stuff, everyone!
BYOND Within #40 is today, right? (:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! Within BYOND #40 is scheduled for release on April 13th :(, which is next week.

The second and fourth Wednesdays of every month is the release schedule, and while in a majority of cases, those two dates are two weeks apart, there are a few cases where months end up with 5 Wednesdays (such as this past March), leaving a three week gap between the two dates.
... >:(
