i open up byond and click to join sever then it just stops working and becomes unresponsive.

The usual problem with this sort of thing is misbehaving antivirus software. Avast in particular has been very bad lately at working with BYOND, and so what you need to do is make sure the entire BYOND installation folder (everything in "bin") is in your antivirus's exceptions list.
