I'm not really a great pixel artists but I got bored and just opened a icon file, and started to make a base. I made two

Make the contrast between the outline and what's inside the outline greater. And the feet are not larger in width than the legs, make them small. Also add some shading, here's a tut on that: http://www.natomic.com/hosted/marks/mpat/shading.html
