Ah, I never played YAGSAC... Though, it looks great!
I'm with Flick... I like the crispiness (heh) of the non-blurred background, but I think that the contrast/brightness should be turned down just a bit... This effect helps to push it further "back" in the mind of the viewer...
I don't like the alternative background. The one thing that ticks me off in space games is low res/blurry star/nebulae textures...

I don't think it's all that hard to see the main game area over the background!
