Broken << cleanup

Thus far we've been unable to verify or reproduce this bug. Or, it has been observed but it cannot be triggered with a reliable test case. You can help us out by editing your report or adding a comment with more information.
The site's attempted auto closing of LEFT ARROWs gets really screwy in some places. You end up with a bunch of imaginary tags at the end of the post, and/or broken/missing in-post content.

If you replace the LEFT ARROW text in that post with an actual <, the rest of the post disappears.

In another post there were code examples with << in plain text, then at the end of the post there were awkward tags, but it has been deleted and I can't seem to reproduce it here.
