This feature has already been implemented, or is already achievable with existing methods.
When mapping, ctrl-click used to set the object you are hovering over to your active object. It doesn't do that any more, you now have to ctrl-shift click.

This is absurdly irritating for anybody who used the previous method for years and got completely used to it. I pretty much based my style of mapping around that, and I know a couple of other people who did too.

It's irritating to the point of making me not want to even touch the mapper, ever.

Can we please get the option to have ctrl+click do what it used to do, while ctrl+shift+click does whatever ctrl+click does now? Please?
Ctrl+click used to activate the replace behavior instead of insert. As of around 455, click and ctrl+click were switched, but the old behavior can be changed back.

Ctrl+click was not used to select the active object in old versions; I tested this in version 429.
