I've been having this problem since I re-installed BYOND about five days ago. I looked around this section of the Forum, and haven't found anything really helpful.

What is happening is that, after logging into both the BYOND Website and the BYOND Pager, starting a game has me connect as a Guest. After reading through the forums, I saw that installing BYOND as an Administrator is supposed to help solve this. So, I did that (with version 495.1136) and tried again. No changes. I continued to look, and saw that BYOND needed to be in the allowed list for my Firewall. I added the entire BYOND folder as an exception, and attempted to connect once again. No changes.

Deciding to take the brute force route, I completely disabled my Firewall and went through the Control Panel to assure that no Firewalls or Antivirus of any kind were causing a problem. Again, no changes. Now, at this point, I decided to just try things. I opened every port on my Router temporarily and tried to log in once more. And yet again, no changes. I was logged in as a guest. At each of these steps, I tried three different games, and each one had the same result of making me a guest.

I'm running a Laptop with Windows 7, 640-bit. I don't have problems with any other game or program on my computer, with or without my Firewall and Antivirus being turned off and my ports forwarded.

Do any of you helpful folks have any ideas for me? I've run out, and I am running slightly short on patience as well.
Try adding the exe's in the byond\bin folder as exceptions not just the folder.

The default install location for BYOND is - C:\Program Files\BYOND\

Hi Icychocobo,

When you listed your entire BYOND folder as an exception, are you talking about the one located in the My documents folder, Or the one located in the Program Files folder? The BYOND folder located in Program Files is the folder that contains the BYOND excuables. Also, make sure that you have your firewall configured to allow BYOND.exe, Dreamdaemon.exe, and Dreamseeker.exe for both incoming and outgoing traffic. If you have any reason to believe that you have any additional firewalls installed on your computer, you may have luck looking at the Processes tab of the Task Manager.

In your first paragraph, you mention that the problem began when you reinstalled BYOND. Is there any particular reason that you had to reinstall BYOND? You may have luck completely uninstalling (Running the uninstaller) and then installing BYOND (as an administrator) once more.

You can also try backing up and deleting the BYOND folder. To do this Open the BYOND pager > File > Preferences > Advanced > Open user directory. From here, create a back-up of this entire folder and then delete it. Completely close the pager and try again.

Good luck!

"When you listed your entire BYOND folder as an exception, are you talking about the one located in the My documents folder, Or the one located in the Program Files folder?"

I exempted the folder in Program Files. I forgot there was one in My Documents, so I didn't mention which one. My mistake.

"Is there any particular reason that you had to reinstall BYOND?"

I had uninstalled it a while ago, since I thought I wasn't ever going to play again. Seems I was wrong. I've uninstalled before now, actually. I forgot to mention it. The reinstall didn't change anything, and I made sure to add the folder as an exemption to my Firewall again.

Alright, I deleted the folder in My Documents and tried to run a game in BYOND, and... It seems to have fixed it. I... How? That... How or why did that fix it?

Um... Thanks a bunch, Higoten. That did the trick for some reason. Can you possibly explain why? I wouldn't have fathomed that the BYOND folder in My Documents would have been the problem, but, it seems that it was. I'm kinda flabbergasted at that being the solution.
Glad to hear it helped, :D

I don't actually know why this happens in some cases, Most-likely due to some tidbit of information becoming incorrect or corrupt (This has happened in at least one other case). An update in BYOND 494 was suppose to help address this, however, it seems it is still occurring.

You don't happen to have a back-up of the BYOND folder you deleted (Check your recycle bin), do you? One of the BYOND developers may want to take a look at it to see what might have gone wrong.
I do indeed. I can try to upload it or something, if you'd like.
That would actually be extremely useful for us. It may be you had a corrupted key file or some setting that isn't working properly. Why don't you zip that up and email it to me at tom@byond.com and I'll take a look.
Ok, good news. We were able to reproduce and patch this. The problem was that for some reason some of your files were created as "hidden" and that was screwing up the initialization. In 496 these files will be "repaired" at load. Hopefully this is the cause of the guest login problem (although I still don't know how the files got in this state).
