one thing i hate is the way people try to limit byond by saying you can never do this etc
i once saw a post where a dude was asking how to create mouse tracking in byond and the only response from the helpers was that it wasn't possible
There are bad but working ways to do things and wrong ways to do things.
If we encourage either of those, BYOND looks awful and all of BYOND's games look awful. The reason we say some things shouldn't or can't be done is because they are bad ideas.
Possible, yes. A good idea no.
i dont see why a 360 shooter cant be more fun that sitting around talking to somebody through a mud
kaich proved det a fun mouse tracker shooter could be made
believe me
i got so obsessed mon

It's the same problem really. The developers with less experience collectively agreed that making a chatroom, base icon, or title screen is impressive because it's easier than making a game. The more experienced developers collectively agreed that lots of things aren't possible because that's easier than making a game. When you think about how much of the work BYOND does for you and how much libraries can do for you, it's actually pretty darn easy to make a game.
i agree, i mean, less experienced developers can go and look at a game like dead and walking and believe that the source rocks, ive seen it and its the most messy bullshit i have ever layed my beautiful little eyes on

So how can we change the attitude of these people? Do you have any suggestions?

If we make good games that raise the bar for what's expected from a BYOND game, these people will either:

1. Realize that their games don't come close to matching the quality of other games and that they must be doing something wrong.

2. Be swept to the side. If BYOND had a lot of activity from decent game developers working productively on actual, decent, playable games, it wouldn't be a problem to say "if you want to talk about base icons or show off your title screen, use a forum on some other website".

Unfortunately, for this to happen, we need people to start making decent games. The community would improve if we had decent games, but to attract developers who would make decent games we need a better community. Maybe if we make it easier to create games, existing community members will have a better shot at creating good games. =)
then tis decided
we shall raise the bar
i shall make a game
it will be glorious
addictive
fun
playable
