I would like to have the ability to right-click on a folder, and select off of a drop-down menu the type of file I want to create. The system of adding in new files and icons is work-able - but clunky and outdated.
If you're looking for an example of this Netbeans does it well.
I just find it annoying to have to click through menus or copy-paste and clear existing files.

The most annoying part for me is having to type out entire type paths when I want to create a new file in a new folder.

I don't use huge folder trees in my projects, but if you have one file in a folder open as you hit New, the path and type of the current file is there by default.

It is still slow and clunky though. Dream Maker could definitely use this upgrade.

I would suggest simply having a toolbar somewhere in the Dream Maker interface, with nice colorful icons for creating new files with each of the extensions. The new file buttons should probably have the same icons as the files themselves, only bigger, just because that would make more sense. I think this is just what Dream Maker needs to feel more user friendly, and it would probably level the learning curve a bit. This would be faster than even a right-click menu, since the buttons would be right there. I can try a mockup of this when I have time.
As for creating them in a specific folder, you could just click the folder first, then click one of the buttons. | |
I like this, but I would like to add-on (or clarify, I'm unsure of your intentions with that last bit) that I would like to be able to create a folder in DM without having to place anything in it. Or perhaps have a more modern "New" popup that gives you a tree to place the file in instead of having to type it out yourself (this would include the "New folder" button in the bottom right of the window).

That is, if you provide the extension in the name, the New File dialogue won't override it with the file type option.
