I'm deciding which OS I would like to use based on how BYOND functions in it: Linux or FreeBSD
Which system would be best, and why?
Should I take virtual machines into account?

The question is, do you even need to worry about performance with Byond? You're limited to one CPU thread, I run 12. This means it will probably run at the same speed even through a VM. So yeah.. Byond applications don't make use of enough performance to warrant worrying really.

Well of course it's all going to depend on your circumstances and what you're working with.
For all we know, Cloud Magic may have a 12 core machine and be wanting to start a hosting server to throw 12 different unoptimized anime games on there. :P | |

Actually, I have a 1 core machine. I am now running a Windows XP VM that I optimized for performance and it's making usage of 2GB of RAM, and BYOND is running great.

It just comes down to which one you'd prefer to use. The 'best' one would probably be the one you have the most experience in. But then, it might be fun to learn something new.
What do you mean about taking VMs into account?
