ok, so maybe im being an old retard, but does anybody remember the period of time where games on byond were really simple with no done up skin? please, dont get me wrong, i love the new stuff that has been coming out of byond like forum accounts libraries and oasiscirles alchemist game. but there was a time. i dont know if any of you used to play ss13 or cow rp back in their prime, even though theyre still very good games now

i just want somebody out there to tell me im not going insane
lol I know what you're talking about. I miss those days too, but the updates are pretty good.
How about Casual Quest? It's more recent but it's probably the most simple yet fun game I've ever played, although it's pretty complex behind the scenes for BYOND's standards.

But yeah, I know what you mean. I used to play Builder's Fantasy 8 years ago. I was 10 at the time, and many memories were made back then.
yh, you have a point with builders fantasy but i wasnt talking about simple games

This is like the second time he's done that. He'll say one thing and then say the complete opposite in another comment.
I miss the days when people actually created games, worked their asses off on them, and either made $ or a faithful fan-base.

What happens now? I used byond back in the day and made a few games, only one I published(it seems to have been lost over time). However I assumed that's what anyone making a game would try to achieve still? I am glad all the anime/fan games have mostly disappeared from the hub looking through it, so not sure what your meaning? I have been thinking about returning and actually building up a game like that(not for money), and just curious what most developers do here now?
I think that was just as rare before as it is now. It's just that fan games aren't as noticed now, but are usually what is worked on. There were a few people doing that back then, and there are a few people doing it now, and from the looks of it some things are happening that might make more people do it now.

So... I don't see the difference? If anything, it's gonna become more common? As for games with simpler interfaces and such, I don't really miss them. It's not like a Super Nintendo game, for example. It doesn't become classic, few from back then even became memorable.

The only BYOND games from even just a few years ago that people here would know and that I can remember pretty well are LRS, Ultimatum, Castle, HU, and Onslaught. LRS and Ultimatum were the only ones I really liked, though Castle was pretty popular and HU was very successful.

Only Ultimatum, though, had a awesome interface design. The others had interfaces I would not want to see again for any other reason than to play the game, if I had no alternative.
Solar Conquest, now that was a neatly put together little game, if we're on the subject of appealing modern themed interfaces versus more retro styled.

My friends and I used to love it back when we had the crew around. But there were these weird glitches where fleets would go missing or they would belong to the person they were attacking. Still fun though!

Hrm, after looking at the players online(over 5k) and only a few hundred(most on SS13) playing the more original games I realize what you mean. How do those 4k+ players even find such games since they are not hosted here? Kinda disappointing that most seem to be playing the unoriginal fan games that BYOND refuses to host on the general list. Makes me hesitant to work on an original game to build up a fan base :(.

You shouldn't expect that your game's fan base will come from within the BYOND community. The community is fairly small. Even if your game is popular within BYOND you'll only have a few thousand players. That sounds like a lot but the number of computer game players is probably in the hundreds of millions - if you want 2000 players you're aiming pretty low. Also, BYOND's community isn't very diverse. If you try to appeal to them, you'll probably make a terrible game that won't appeal to many other people.

Oh, no! Don't let that hold you back. NEStalgia was booming for a while, and it got most of its players from outside of BYOND. Even now it does pretty decent, I believe.

Besides, who's gonna get more people on BYOND, or more people playing original games if no ones making good original games? It may be tougher, but people have to get out there and try. I think the only reason there aren't more people playing the original games is that there aren't many good ones around here, and it just appears worse because of the huge fan base that backs anime and thus anime games.

I guess what I'm saying is well... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aBDbeK1igc

Can't re-watch it right now, but if I recall correctly that video will say it better than I can. Don't fear failure.
Very true, if I my game comes to fruition I can advertise it elsewhere to attract people. Thanks for the encouragement :D, I will keep going at it.
Almost every few months we get people making similar arguments: "What happened to the good days of BYOND?"

The answer is rather simple: you're growing out of the games being presented here. The majority of the games shown 4 to 5 years ago still exist in some form or another. You also probably had fun with a certain group of friends then. But as each one of them slowly moved on, it became difficult to replace those personalities.

By the way, SS13 is by no means simple. I'd say SS13 is the Dwarf Fortress of BYOND; in terms of complexity.

^ This, unfortunately the range of games that fits the category of topics like this stopped development before or around the implementation of customised skins. As developers, we seem totally incapable of reaching an outside audience, and in some cases look like we fight just to have a decent proportion of the insular BYOND population.
im working on something that ill publish with dmb2exe
