I understand that part, I don't understand why they're from the same news outlet..
Actually, I sort of see that as a good thing. The Post has more than one opinion writer, and it allows them to disagree.

Opinion columnists are allowed to have their own diverse range of opinions. The outlet doesn't mandate a singular viewpoint as an institution.

So basically the washington post is trying to give equal opportunity to conservative and liberal viewpoints...

Fair enough. Still weird. It's like getting mixed signals from someone.
Opinion columnists are rarely employees. They are often independent journalists under contract.

And yeah, a lot of institutions try to give the appearance of objectivity by giving both extremes equal time, rather than trying to hire people capable of thinking objectively and doing real investigative reporting.
