Here's a quick screenshot of the tactical phase of combat in action:

The tactical phase gives you a chance to look over the battlefield, adjust your equipment and position, use items or prepare a spell, and coordinate with your allies (if you're playing with any.)

The squares with the "auras" superimposed over them are the ones within the player's tactical movement range. Before combat begins, you can adjust your position anywhere within that range. The size and shape of it depends on your choices during chargen... skill in Combat increases your own range slightly, skill in Leadership increases your whole party's range by more. Aggressive fighting styles let you move closer to the enemy at the outset and defensive/ranged ones let you move farther back.

The slightly differently shaded squares around the outside mark the extent of the companion's range. The difference is quite a bit easier to tell when they're actually flashing, but I'm going to exaggerate it a bit more. Normally your companion's tactical range extends one square beyond yours, but putting points in Companion Bond and the Proxy combat style increases it.

The "Go" and "Flee" buttons are a bare-bones beginning of the tactical HUD. I think in the final version they'll say "Fight" and "Run", just for nostalgia's sake. Well, that also makes for convenient keyboard shortcuts.
