Nobody likes having to pick which friend is better than another, so I think that it would make alot of sense to have the friends list be alphabetized.

I think enough people like having control over the list to leave it the way it is.
If you don't want to rank friends, just leave them in the order you added them or alphabetize them yourself. [Edit] Although I think nice 'move up' and 'move down' re-order buttons would be great. | |
Almost all requests are to give Members more flexibility rather than less...in this case, of course, you can alphabetize yourself if you wish...:)
There is another purpose to the order: It sets the order that blog updates from friends are listed. If you have a lot of friends, there may be updates you want to filter to the top.
