I think that majoring in Illustration won't be as helpful to you career-wise, because any job you try to get will be judged purely on your ability, not a degree.

Animation, while very similar, would be more beneficial than Illustration to actually take courses in, because half of animation is technical work that can be challenging to learn on your own.
