I am working on an RPG called Dark Era. I have recently began working on a pet system with the help of swarmy's pet demo (although its almost completely modified, as it was very buggy and I change the combat..), and I was wondering, what features would you like to see a pet have in an RPG? Please post your ideas here...

I would like to see one hub...

Pets that can get items for you would be neat. What? Can't get that apple out of the tree? Your monkey pet can help a little with that one.

Pets that can explore for you would be swell. What's on the other side of the wall, Polly?--"Crackers! Awwwk!"

The classic pets-that-fight-for-you thing is overdone, but a few pets - pigs, dogs, etc - might do well in that role.

Pets that can see in the dark--even when you can't--would be a cool element to gameplay. "Batty shrieks as you almost bump into a wall!"

Pets that you *don't want* might be a very fun and interesting gameplay element. Think of the movie The Lion King - ZaZu the bird was sort of like an unwanted pet of Simba, the young adventurer. Simba wanted to go to the elephant graveyard, but if he did, ZaZu would tell his father. Such a pet might be fun for quests, etc--a hindrance rather than a help.

Pets that react to your actions would be a lot more realistic. If there were a benefit to making your pets happy, giving them attention but not spoiling them, and giving them proper training and exercise, people might value their pets a lot more. If you've played Monster Rancher or Dragon Seed for the Playstation, you've played a very pet-based game--the entire gameplay is based on building your pet's skills and loyalty, then testing those skills and loyalty in battle. In a roleplaying game, more layers could be added to create a truly origional and involving pet experience.

I will delete the Closed Testing hub when it is ready for open testing....

On the note of Pirate Head's post, I will try to make a system where you must control your pet, but I'm mainly just gonna do the system similar to Mystic Journey where you get your pet to attack for you and they level up as well, but they will not defend you.... The way you will be able to create pets is by a quest (that may be a bit hard to find), or if you are in the Elven Lands....

Ack, I read the topic wrong. I thought it said, 'What would you like to see in an RPG???'.

Whats the point of making a completely new hub for the exact same game? Just put the words 'Closed Testing' as the description.

Booooring! PirateHead had some ace ideas.

I like his ideas, but they wouldn't be good for this type of RPG. I am however going to provide some interactivability with players and pets, and possibly a system where pets can grow up as well..... Oh yea, and on the thing about 2 hubs...

My hosts and GM's feel that it should be there to have an open forum for people to submit that they would like to be a tester.. It is also easier for my hosts to download the host files that way..
