You can use DM Script (look up in the DM Reference the 'script' variable and 'macros'), but it's not as flexible as interface macros can get. There's not much reason not to use an interface file, even if you use the default skin with tweaks such as this (you can copy it from your BYOND folder to your game's folder and edit).
