Well, fruit flies are sometimes attracted to mirrors. Let's say if they're swatted at while on the mirror, they almost always come back. They could use that method to see if they come back to a place where they know danger is at, where as they wouldn't if they had a short-term memory.

Although, I don't think you can really tell what's on the mind (if anything) of something so... teeny-weeny.
