I have downloaded the the original doom for the X-Box. And it reminded me that it is the best game ever. <3 doom. Anyone know where I can get some wads for it?

What's a "wad"?

It changes the levels and stuff.

I don't know about that. It was great when it was first released, but it's only major selling points were it's 3Dness and guns. They were enough at the time, but now they're less than special.

I remember a Simpsons wad being released, which was entertaining, but I can't remember if it was for Doom or Doom II.

I played the simpsons one too, it was awsome. I got it earlyer this morning.

it's amazing what a little effort and google can produce. searching for "doom wad files" turns up:

http://www.doomwadstation.com/doom_reviews/
http://www.starfighter.acornarcade.com/mysite/doom.htm
http://www.execnet.com/index.html?page=/filelibs/ l448p002.html (doom and doom2 wads)
http://www.filelibrary.com/Contents/DOS/104/83.html (contains a few wads, but mostly tools for doom and doom2)

and of course the source for all things Doom -http://www.planetdoom.com/ with doom-specific stuff here: http://www.planetdoom.com/doom/files/

google is your friend! try it! you'll like it!

I think there were indeed a few Simpsons wads for DOOM. However, I think my favorite has always been the Energizer Bunny.

The levels and cheap sprites my friend and I created were rather nifty too. Unfortunately, we lost them. :(

Its an archive format, like a zip. Doom keeps all its data like graphics, sounds and music in a big WAD file. You can download (or make) skin files called PWADs which replace some parts of the game data.

For example the Simpsons one (from memory) lets you play as Homer, the enemies turn into other characters like Police Chief Wiggum and the powerups turn into things like duff cans and donuts.

I think Doom with a Barney (the purple dinosaur thing) PWAD was the first shoot-em-up I played.
The 'original' Doom? How big is it? The original Doom came on two floppy disks, and had about 6 levels. Not the 50-level thing you can get.

That might be the Doom 1 Shareware version which you can still get here: ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/doom/doom19s.zip (2.3mb)

The shareware version only has only the first episode (of three, I think) included. That's nine maps. Yes! Nine maps in a demo version and multiplayer support! It's amazing how generous game companies used to be with their shareware versions, nowadays you usually get half a map single-player only if you get a demo at all. You can't use PWADs or custom maps with it, though.

Not the 50-level thing you can get.
The 50-level version you can get for Playstation etc is Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 combined. Ultimate Doom is the original Doom plus an extra episode. Doom 2 is well, Doom 2 the 32 map sequal.

The old shareware Doom linked above may not work on newer computers, so let me suggest getting Doom Legacy which is an open source extended version that can take advantage of 3d acceleration etc. Get it at http://legacy.newdoom.com/

If you want the orginal Doom, Doom 2 and Ultimate Doom wads, hit me up on AIM @ SNickideums

Have you tried Quake or Duke Nukem 3D yet for the Xbox? Pretty damn sweet.

Actully if you compaired the orginal games to the xbox ported versions, they are actcually grapchially better.

I cant beliueve how good Quake Looks on the Xbox.

Or BUY them legally for very cheap.

*buzz* wrong answer! but thanks for playing!

i believe the doom source and wads are available for free now- been open-sourced by id Software, just like Quake has been.

:(

Still buy it though, eh?

And post the money to My house.
Doom 1's graphics were nothing new or special. Infact, Orgin had made Ultima Underworld around the time that Wolfenstein 3-D was released, and Ultima Underworld had not only Doom-quality graphics, but jumping, and the ability to look up and down, also the ability to use the mouse.

Do a google search for WAD files. i have an old 486 with Doom 1/2 on it and the editor that lets you make WADs, it was fun for awhile.

If you play Doom or Doom2, you should get zDoom, since it give you mouse look and juping and other things. It basicly runs Doom with the quake engine, and it's alot of fun.

Digi, I have been googling, but maybe people know where there are some custom doom wads that dont show on it.

Shades, I'll try to get you when your online. I got Duke3D yesterday, but it wont work for some messed up reason. I beat Quake way too many times to really want it again :(

gotta go with Bob on this one. legacyDoom (or newdoom depending on who you talk to) rocks! you can play doom, doom 2, heretic, hexen, and a few other formats as well as it's own legacy doom format. it has many features (jump pads, up/down firing, luminosity, dynamic lighting, 32-player network play, soon-to-be 3D model support, fog, semi-transparencies, and even work as a side-scroller) over the existing doom setup. and just about every pc-platform out there, including PocketPC, can run legacy doom!
