Hello Readers! The Rio Olympics are officially underway and some of the best athletes on Earth are competing and going for the gold! Perhaps BYOND needs its own Olympic Challenge (Just don't burn out everyone for GIAD in October) with medals. Updates are on their way!

BYOND

Stairs and high heat and humidity have impeded BYOND's progress over the past two weeks, with BYOND Developer Lummox JR falling down one, and not being able to get the other to drop. Nevertheless, a new release was made today that helps bring the Webclient on par with the new beta features introduced to Dream Seeker. Caching Maptext is somewhere on the radar, and some users will now be able to use their game-pads without any configuration at all.

Kumorii took a trip down memory lane, revisiting a video made nearly five years ago. While the vision and goals of that video aren't all present in today's unreleased version of Feed, new guns and other improvements are. A six-shooter joins in, 3DG3-10RD fires lasers, and Pink Dream is a part of the arsenal as well. Guns overall are now more energy efficient, and more accurate. Perfect for taking down hordes of violent zombies.

Ishuri is shedding some light on Land of Fire with their newest set of improvements to the day and night dynamic lighting system. Slickly encroaching darkness is held at bay by a street lamp in one of the GIFs. Zane has been busy creating maps for players to walk around, a glitch inspired the addition of mounts, and Sullight is creating enemies that need knocked out. They are currently planning to apply to the Square Enix Collective on August 20.

Bravo1 shared a new demo for Lux, the side-scrolling adventure on an unknown alien planet. The new demo includes general fixes that should allow the demo to be played more smoothly. After trying out the demo, head on over to the Steam Greenlight page, to voice your thoughts and support.

Chance and Doohl shared a few screenshots from the upcoming Severed World. While the Webclient is becoming more adequately stable and the game nears a public beta test. The developers had a little fun with a one on one team deathmath, a wizard taking a vacation on a beach with an emergency order, and a few stabs at a rock golem... It's not very effective...

Foogimicester has shared the latest developments on Main Street, a retail-management tycoon game. Players now maintain their progress in between server reboots and client disconnects. Four shop themes and 18 new shelf types provide varying strategy and uniqueness among the outlets. These new features come at a cost though, rent is levied every 10 minutes, and the taxing entities are getting on board as well.

The feared Necromancer Flick has been raising the dead in his latest creation Skellievid (Not sure if that's supposed to be Skellievideo, in which case the name may just be Skellie... Digression.) in a graveyard on a full moon's night. Staff and Sword wielding skeletons are seen walking about and hitting one another. Spooky music plays for a few seconds in one video, and maybe we'll see a release by Halloween... 2016? Also, my condolences for his grandmother's recent departure. May she rest in peace.

Kozuma3 has shared screenshots of their newest creation. From what I can see, inventory management and skill development are both in. (More speculation: Is Elora steadily advancing though the computer gaming ages? Up next: Elora: Isometric.)

Zombies are invading upon Blackadam's newest creation. Luckily for us, there appears to be something that we can do about it. Guns fire rapidly and have spot lights. Bombs have a huge explosion radius. Police cars seem effective. There are a variety of zombies with different attributes for added strategy, and a mostly dynamic map ensures there are no good hiding spots... for long.

TheMagicMan has been stirring up the BYOND Developer's show-off thread with a handful of screenshots of what appears to be a trading card game (Bets on Manacept 2, anyone?) Pictures show a handful of cards, the playing arena, the deck editor, and the lobby.

BYOND Resources

  • Ter13 explores ways to use the absolute path operator to help combine relevant code together.
  • ErikHanson has pushed FastDMM into Beta. FastDMM is a Java-based expandable replacement for Dream Maker's map editor.
  • S_String has updated Fire Simulator, which simulates Space Station 13's key environmental factors. Atmos tech was always my favorite job anyhow.
  • Finding new ways to express his arguments, Ter13 stumbled upon the ability to use expressions as default arguments, and shared some examples. (Check out the comments for when not to use expressions in arguments).
  • Change time with Danny Roe's Snippet on Time Conversions!
  • For those more mathematically inclined, PopisFizzy digs into some speed tests relating to precomputed inverses and repeated divisions.
An Olympics for BYOND is a great idea. Perhaps for different genres? :P
still waiting for Lummox to port BYOND to Dreamcast.

would open up new possibilities for both devs and players aswell as bring byond some much needed attention

Heh, that was an episode of Criminal Minds playing in the background. I normally just record gifs and had the sound off on my laptop when I watched the video. Didn't realize until later that the sound was recording. Glad I didn't say anything too stupid. :P

They are bi-weekly :)
(or something like that)
Or every two weeks, since nobody can ever seem to agree on what bi-anything stands for.
