Freedom will dwarf the Queen Elizabeth II and become a permanent home for 50,000 people.

“Freedom will be large enough to bring on more than 50,000 residents, 15,000 employees, 20,000 day guests and still have four times as much roaming-around square footage per person as the most modern cruise liners,

Seems like a waste to me. Imagine if that thing tipped over >_>
Or a tornado... or a tidal wave... or a sumo... or the fat-bearded lady... or if the fuel source runs out... and the kids deciding it would be fun to see how quickly the boat can burn down :)
When it sinks this'll be a hollywood goldmine for insensitive films made half a decade after the horrific events.

Maybe that's why they're building it in the first place...
not if, WHEN. They're gonna make a B movie involving this ship and gay cowboys eating pudding when it tips.
"Zomg people died in 9/11, it's been five years make a movie!"

"The boat containing shitloads of people has burned and sunk, this is like titanic or pearl harbor, hot shit! Make a movie!"
Why don't they just build an island? Or better yet, make a damn city. How in the hell are you supposed to drive that thing? It takes up so much damn room in the water. That is just an accident waiting to happen. Do you have any idea how many terrorist attacks attempts are going to be targeted for that boat alone? Pft, the Iraqies are probably finding a way to blow it up as we speak. You know that boat will crash, sink, or something else disastrious within twenty years.
Psh screw you guys, I'm getting a damn room on that ship.
I like how in reply to "Can you imagine if that thing sank? If so, don't build it", someone says "Oh shutup, let's not build airplanes because they might crash.", and then ends it with the highly intelligent insult, "rtard."

First of all, a plane crash costs around 100-200 lives. This thing would probably cause a lot more deaths than the World Trade Center attacks. I bet they could save less than 1% of the people if it sank.

Second of all, it is MUCH easier to sink a ship.... Let alone this "come and bomb me" ingenious design. The ship is meant to look beautiful, when in reality it should be designed like a heavily armored tank. A plane is mostly safe from artillary attacks, is safer from terrorist attacks (as of sept 11), safe from kamikazis, and much safer from booby traps. And you know any structure (especialaly American or one of its allies) that houses thousands of people is a prime target for terrorists, and as explained above, it would be a sinch to bomb it to the great beyond. Not to mention its risks involving collusions.

Now, a plane isn't THAT much safer, but the point is that a plane only has a few hundred people on it -- This thing will have THIRTY THOUSAND. That thing is going to sink like a rock.

Sure, it's a really cool idea and would be very cool to live (vacation/whatever) on, but this is one of those deals where the combined idiocy and ignorance of too many people are going to lead to thousands of lives lost. Just like the Iraq war.

Ah but, even if it may sink. It's just another chance to show how much we have advanced :) Just like that middle east prince that actually built an island with a city.

I love how you said that solely iraqies are probably planning on attacking it.
Apperently we learned nothing from titanic... they should make another movie.
i think i would get sick of living on the damn ocean after a while.
me too i can't swim
That's because black people don't float.

I'm just kidding black people, you know I love most black people. You know, except Animal porn over there.
I was talking to a friend of mine who does something along the lines of aquatic engineering and it's actually a really sound design (apparently he's in the best class in the country/world or something, we all just call it boat school so I'm not sure what it is exactly).
Someone in his class did a full scale report on it and as stupid as it sounds it's actually really safe. You've got about as much chance of sinking it as you do a coastal city. It's too slow to crash into something by accident, and for the same reason hijacking it and ramming it into something wont work.

That said I don't have much faith in the project itself.
Thats what they said about the titanic O.o

Can it help th ship from being saved if a fire started? :P
Man I didn't know there were so many nautical engineers on BYOND!
Can it help th ship from being saved if a fire started? :P

I'd imagine the fire crew might have a shot at putting it out. They're going to put a little more effort into this than just putting smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in every second hallway.

It's pretty hard to burn any boat down, and in this situation it's more like burning a city down. A city that was built from the ground up with all the modern technology available.
You'd probably have more luck burning down an established city, they're full of buildings that were built decades before the current fire safety regulations were put into place.

I think this is going to be a massive failure, but more because it'll end up populated with wackos than any sort of stupid oversight such as ramming it into an iceberg. At the very least it'll be able to help us develop other technologies, so I'm willing to let these guys throw their money away on it. =P
