This issue has been resolved.
As far as i can tell the layering/composite filter fails to produce any output when using a render target as source for it. I've tested this in various situations and i can't seem to get it to work.
It seems to work fine with other forms of input, so far (Though i haven't done much testing in that direction). Hopefully I'm not grossly misunderstanding the usage of the filter here.

1. Give image or object a render target
2. Use said render target as source for layer filter applied to another image or object.

I've uploaded a tiny test project to illustrate the issue:
http://s000.tinyupload.com/ index.php?file_id=64006605809397090741

Expected Results:
Visible output from the layering filter.

Actual Results:
No visible output from the layering filter.

Does the problem occur:
Always as far as i can tell.

Workarounds:
Have not found any.
