This issue has been resolved.
Descriptive Problem Summary:

The "read only" box in the icon editor doesn't actually prevent editing the icon. It does:

Prevent saving (occasionally it just crashes instead)
Prevent undo/redo from working
Prevent clipboard usage

Also, why the hell does the "read only" box default to on for PNG files? Especially ones you've unchecked it on before, that's just dumb.
