Alright. I'm on broadband, my ISP is Comcast, and well... my internet sucks.

It takes 30 seconds to several minutes for Firefox to connect and load up a webpage, Azureus won't even download faster than 1 Kbps when I'm connected to over 50 peers, Winamp takes several minutes to connect to online radio stations (di.fm), and I'm regularly disconnected from BYOND games (intervals between the disconnections can be as small as a few minutes)

Sometimes, My router is unresponsive to pings and the internet doesn't work. I used to just restart the router, and it would be fine... but lately I noticed that its been taking longer to load webpages, the router has been "dieing more frequently", and well... My intrawebs have been crappier.

Any suggestions, peoples?
Sounds like a router issue if anything.
I used to have some problems like this with Cox, until one day I just couldn't get on the internet anymore. I ended up going out and buying a Linksys router (wireless, just in case I bought some sort of sweet wireless device (which I did (and I like it (and I use the browser a lot (and I do NOT use it to look up porn)))).
Plug the Ethernet cord into one computer directly from the modem. If it works continually well, your router sucks.

Problem with that is, I'm not the only one using the connection. However, luckily for me, the others aren't here right now (pesky roommates).

Also, I'm not too sure how I should set up the connection for that, because it's not my computer that gets the connection, it's the router, and Comcast doesn't supply a username and password last time I checked... so the wizard that is provided with Windows might not work so great.

What??? None of that makes sense. I'm trying to get you to directly plug the internet into the computer. If the router is the problem, you plug the internet into the computer and the internet works fine, then you'll know for sure. You shouldn't have to setup anything if you plug the modem directly into the computer. The computer really doesn't recognize the router. There is no Windows wizard for broadband with a username and password, just dial-up.

You lost me.

He might not have a modem as such. I don't; I just have a set-top box (it does TV too) with an Ethernet cable connected to it. The Ethernet cable goes into the computer, and the computer runs some ISP-provided software to set up the connection (rather like you would do with a dial-up connection - in fact, it's PPPoE, so it more or less is a dial-up connection in some respects).

You can, however, just plug the set-top box straight into a router, and configure the router itself to do the PPPoE dialing-up. That's what I do, and that's probably what he does too. The only problem with this is that you can't plug the set-top box straight into the computer and expect it to just work. You need to install and run the ISP-provided software as well.
