You can say, at the very least, the quality of living for poor people is improving, even if it is still pretty bad.

Amusingly enough, that's very true. I grew up in a broken down house, my father unable to work and my mom working shifts as long as she could to try to support my family. We were on welfare and most of the time all we could get was the food they provided to us, which at that time was nothing but dry Cheerios and Ramen. Now, looking around at all the people with welfare these days, they have access cards and all kinds of stuff; no trips to the food bank and they can get whatever kinds of food they want without feeling inferior about having to pay for their food with food stamps instead of real money like everyone else. It's funny how things change.

Even Cheerios and Ramen are pretty good. It's not exactly great food, but one can live off it, and live quite healthy. Food is cheap, and even people on the bottom end can afford something. Go back 100 years, and if you were poor, you better hope you could hunt or farm, because if you didn't have money, you didn't buy food.

You never know, maybe abusive dad or something.
2007 in abridged Linux news:

Cons:
  • Hans Reiser (prominent open source developer and Linux hacker) may have killed his Russian mail-order bride and had to stop coding to go defend himself in court.
  • 2007 was not The Year Of The Linux Desktop(tm) as had been hoped.

Pros:
  • Google announced Linux-based Android phones. Dozens of companies federate with them to bring the software, hardware, networking, and marketing support needed to put Free Software in the hands of millions around the world.
  • FIC announced Linux-based OpenMoko phones. The hardware and software are totally Free And Open to the greatest possible extent. Demand has outmatched supply - FIC hadn't expected to see such huge demand for a "niche market hacker phone". They have moved thousands of units and are working hard to satisfy a large waiting list.
  • Dell announced that will sell laptops and desktops with Ubuntu Linux pre-installed. They move 40,000 units in the first few months with sales rocketing up.
  • Everex announced that it would sell a $200 PC with the Ubuntu-derived gOS Linux pre-installed on it. They moved 15,000 units in the first week and haven't been able to keep them on the shelves.
  • Asus announced that it would sell a $400 ultra-portable laptop with Xandros Linux and open-source software pre-installed. They have sold one every 6 seconds since the launch and cannot keep them in stock.
  • The One Laptop Per Child project starts its production run of its flagship XO Linux laptop, moving over 200,000 units in its first few months.
  • Intel's Classmate laptop, powered by Mandriva Linux, moves millions of units to Nigeria. Nigerian authorities had planned on putting Windows XP onto them when they arrived, but were impressed by Mandriva and decided to keep it despite an underhanded offer from Microsoft to give them the Windows XP and MS Office licenses for free.
  • This year is gonna be the year of the Linux desktop. Seriously. Not even kidding this time. Think how hard we weren't kidding last year -- this year, we're even more not kidding. It's totally going to be the year Linux takes over the world. ...don't look at me like that.

That's just boring. I live in PA, and I know it's just boring.

Unless you go to Philly, where it's not boring because you have to watch yourself every minute of the day to be aware of someone trying to kill you.

Pros:
BYOND 4.0
I'm still alive.
Hahah I tried to read this thread but I couldn't stop laughing when I saw that some people's most important pros for the year were Linux gaining market share.
