I believe that was an attempt at humor...

da = from

So, if you were to "translate" his name, you get "Leonardo from Vinci"

Going a step further, to make it even more "modern", you remove the o from Leonardo, and you get Leonard...

So, it becomes "Leonard from Vinci"
