Nocturne is infested with many types of strange supernatural entities that get filtered out from the the planar streams between Earth and beyond. The natural energy of Nocturne is Eclipse, which is innate to the few beings native to Nocturne. More commonly it accrues in these unstable beings that get stuck in Nocturne's many wards and alleys.

When a player comes across these hostile entities, and for lack of a better word, terminates it, they too pick up a good chunk of the Eclipse 'radiation' that builds up over time.

Eclipse acts as both a sort of game currency, yet there are no shops (yet at least). It can be focused to create new items, spells, maneuvers, etc. Eclipse serves to sculpt the less set-in-stone aspect of a character.

Essence is the energies foreign to Nocturne. It is carried over by foreign beings, the player being among that populace. Essence is also taken from the slain and is used to define Attributes and Abilities which do not change as readily as things bought with Eclipse.

Eventually in the course of gameplay, the players will come across Nocturne's Servitors. The Servitors are divine beings, somewhere beyond demi-god but below Zeus. They preside over discrete city blocks of Nocturne. The players can expect to engage several of these boss characters if they follow the 'quests/missions/events'.

After many events and character building, there will be the option to become a Servitor. Gameplay shifts focus toward a weak RTS perspective while in Servitor-mode. You can then spend Eclipse to create your own city block and build it up. You are at war with the other Servitors as well; initially the game has 16 original Servitors who control the 'official' part of the game world. Essence is then spent on improving Servitor abilities.
