Yeah, I think I would have gone a different route to get rid of the black lines.

For instance, the window dimensions could be less wide or the non-map elements could be wider. However, that would not help if the player is allowed to resize the window.

My solution is generally to turn control_freak off, create a giant child control, stick the map in one pane and stick the most of the rest in the other. Players can then adjust the child splitter to get rid of the black map edges and the changes will be saved in the skin.
I was trying to get the map to always be square. The black lines are just that the size of the map is slightly larger than the client view on one axis.
