I'm just wondering what everyone's thoughts on this is.

If you're in the dark(horrible, unintended racial pun), Every April many states in the south celebrate "Confederate Heritage Month." It's essentially celebrating the fact they lost the "Northern War of Secession" to a bunch of "God damn Yankees." This year, VA's Governor announced April 2010 would be recognized as CHM for his state, which has received national attention.

I have a quite a bit of knowledge on this, since:
A) I've lived in North Carolina for quite a while.
B) I have a few "dumb redneck" friends.
C) Somehow, I have a distant relative that died fighting for the Confederacy.

What I've learned is that this isn't quite as racially driven as it is culturally(no that doesn't make it racist, the culture isn't racist). For whatever reason, Southerners LOVE their Confederate heritage. Don't ask me why, I haven't the slightest clue. This isn't saying that their aren't racists in the field who use CHM to further their racism.

My beef with celebrating CHM is that, well, the Confederate States seceded from our great country. That's treason in every sense of the word. How can you celebrate being Benedict Arnold's descendant? It, in it's very essence, seems anti American. I've tried to explain this to the locals on more than one occasion(in vain).

I'd also like to point out that in retaliation to the heated fervor it's stirred here(locally, as it does every year), I plan on celebrating Russian Heritage Month*, complete with hammer and sickle, and a re-enactment of the Soviet Union taking Moscow while America watched. I can't wait for June

Again, thoughts on it are appreciated.

* - I'm a Russian American, and proud of it. Now, I despise communism, I love America, and my only reason for acting like a Marxist is to make a point.
To see what a bastion of easily-duped neoconservative supporters a large part of the once-confederate south has become, I can't help but muse that we should have stripped their right to vote as part of their non-conditional surrender.

But, of course, saying that folks you don't particularly agree with don't deserve democracy is about as anti-American of a sentiment as you can get.

Next time they want to secede, I say we let em'. See how long they last largely lead by politicians who enjoy giving their rich friends a tax cut before they become a third world country begging for financial assistance.

I'm down here, and the weather is MUCH nicer than it is in say, Ohio(or anywhere else up there).

1. Not much of a refuting for my outburst so much as a comment on how much better your weather is. You're probably going completely over my head here.

2. If you're merely south of Ohio, you're probably not a part of the confederate south. Maybe if you were on the extreme west end of Texas you could be argued as such.

[Edit: Actually, I'm wrong, for some reason I heard "Ohio" and thought "Idaho." Serves me right, I'm kneejerking like crazy today. I need to chain myself to Dream maker before I make even more of an ass of myself today.]
Haha, I live in NC. I lived in Ohio for about 15 years, and my best friend is from Connecticut, so any arguments about weather is just silly. Also, the Desert isn't as nice(the weather is moody in AZ and NM), and I can't stand Californians.

Getting off track myself here, if you're on the Atlantic coast, you don't see nearly as many dumb rednecks as you do in the foothills. Hell, anything from Raleigh over is pretty moderate-to-liberal.
Texas tricked the slaves by not telling them the Civil War was over, and they were free, till WAY later...The emancipation of slaves in Texas took the longest.

Lmao, Go Texas Heritage?!

To be honest though, I dont get how people can be "proud" of something they did not contribute too... Its like being proud of race, when...You didnt do a damn thing
I live in Alabama and I've never heard that this is Confederate History month O.O

Although the city I currently reside in and have lived near my entire life is predominantly black

I was reading somewhere that Alabama has the most progressive law about their confederate heritage month. I'm not sure how or why, but I'm VERY surprised that ABALAMA is progressive in anything, especially something involving race.
