This game plays a lot like Sid Meier's "Pirates!" Be sure to read the instructions or you might have trouble getting started. Turn rates are very low, especially for larger ships, so don't expect to press left/right arrow once and see your ship change directions (unless moving at full speed).
I suggest spending the first few minutes plundering a pinnace or two to boost your cannon count before taking on larger vessels. Don't forget you can also find treasure by looking at treasure maps within towns and then digging for it. Most treasure maps cost more to view than you start with, so it's still necessary to plunder some boats first.
There is multiplayer support. If you see a boat without a pilot, you can walk into it to plunder and sink it. This has the same effect as sinking the boat using cannon fire, but you get more gold out of it.
If you have less than 250 gold when you die, none of it gets added to your score. If you have more than 250, your score will go up. The best way to increase your score, though, is to do so in town.
