I, for one, really like what Ginseng's trying to achieve with Dungeon Master.
I'm not saying the game's perfect - what is, really? The main sticking points right now are:
1. I think it could really benefit from some automation. You can only really direct one unit at a time, the rest just sort of idle around aggressively. It'd be much better to give all those worker bees something to do.
Dwarf Fortress really excels at automation, but they're an extreme case, you don't even need to go that far. If you could give your followers a set of standing orders to repeat, things would skyrocket.
Monolithic fortresses hewn, armies raised, and so on.
2. The learning curve (like in many BYOND games) is mostly unaccounted for. If you want more people to play a game, you need to throw em' more of a bone than RTFM. The interface itself could be a part of the process, there's some tooltip support.
3. Some stability issues. Bugs, can't live with em', can't sign them off as anything but inevitable on an ambitious project.
Eh, I probably didn't say anything they didn't know already. Can't complain, really - this is a labor of love that we're not paying a dime for, what's the rush? This is BYOND, if you think you can do better, by all means take a stab at it.
