It downloads the resources file. BYOND doesn't handle it properly due to an error in packaging on my end, apparently (despite using default options)

After you get a badge, the game restarts, yes. You unlock new starters, and you begin again from the beginning to attempt to unlock other things.

Well, in pokemon, you don't have to practically beat the game before you take on a gym. Also, the game gives you no recommendations on when to take them, so I'd assume the first "boss" is easy (as is always the case.)
