Configure Norton Internet Security 2008 to allow BYOND
The next chapter in my Firewall series, Norton Internet Security 2008.
Norton is the "magnificent" creation by the computer security company: Symantec. Although they're alright for virus information and removal tools, they have yet to master a decent anti-virus or firewall...
Much like Zone Alarm, if Norton has only just been installed chances are you'll be prompted (a lot...) if you want to allow byond.exe, dreamseeker.exe and dreamdaemon.exe access to the internet. It's just a simple matter of telling it to allow access. Screenshot 1 Screenshot 2
If however, you've had Norton Internet Security 2008 installed for a while, chances are you wont be prompted to allow access for BYOND. So we'll now go through the steps on how to make Norton accept BYOND.
First and foremost, open up the Norton control panel via the Start Bar menu or Task Bar icon. For this tutorial, we're going to assume that Norton hasn't had many options change. Screenshot
The Control Panel for NIS08 is pretty standard. Screenshot
From here, we want to click on the Options link, and select "Norton Internet Security". Screenshot
Another window will have opened, we want to select the "Personal Firewall" option. Screenshot
This window will have two options we want to access. The first one being "Program Control" and the second being the left most "Configure" option. First, we will click on "Program Control". Screenshot
Scroll through the program box until you find "byond.exe", "dreamseeker.exe" and if you're planning on hosting "dreamdaemon.exe". As with the others, we wont need to focus on "dreammaker.exe" if it is listed there. There will be a drop down box next to each of the programs, make sure that box is set to "Allow". Screenshot
Now go back to "Program Control". If the buttons aren't enabled, don't worry about the rest of these steps. Simply close your pager and relaunch it.
Click on the "Configure" button and a new pop-up window will open. Screenshot
This pop-up window will contains the programs that have unlimited access to the Internet. If BYOND's executables aren't there, then we will have to add them. Click on the "Add" button, go to your BYOND folder and add "byond.exe", "dreamseeker.exe" and if you plan on hosting "dreamdaemon.exe".
Once you have completed those tasks, the window should look something like this: Screenshot
From here on out, it's just a matter of clicking "Ok" and closing off the Norton Control Panel. After you have done so, shut-down off all your BYOND applications and re-open the pager. Happy Playing!
(Note: As with the other tutorials, please note this might not be the only problem obstructing your pagers connection to the Internet. This is still but one step.)

Well then may you perhaps know the problem I am getting? Coz it seems odd that I can only log into those specific ports and others it keeps on saying failed like for eg " Connecting to byond://xxxxxxxxxx ....................failed."

Can you do one for Avast Antivirus? Because I cant seem to log into all the games only some of them. Like the ones hosting on ports 6112,4446,20,10000 and 5000 are the ones I can login, others I can't.

I've updated all my firewall posts with the tag "firewall". I figure the link "http://www.byond.com/members/ BYONDHelp?command=view_keyword_posts&keyword=firewall" might be handy sometime.

I told you not to do it, but you just had to. "I'm doing it for the children, think of the children!" is not an OK excuse for self torture.
