Blue Book Reprint

Hey guys,

Just an update on what's going on with the whole BYOND Merchandising thing - there are a few shirt designs in the works for t-shirts and such for BYOND, hopefully a few good ones will emerge from them.

But an recent idea that I've embarked upon is reprinting the Blue Book - mainly as a nostalgic thing, but it also has its uses for the newbie. You can get a copy at around $12.00 USD, which is a pretty good deal if I say so myself. Because I don't have the original artwork for the original Blue Book (which is a pain in the ass) I decided to make a more up-to-date one using Photoshop. Here it is:

I'll be putting the original Guide text into the book over the next week or so - a lot of reformatting is required to make it fit the book printer's standards so I'm working towards that.

This might motivate someone or a group of people to re-write or at least update the Dream Maker guide to be more compliant with BYOND 4.0 techniques and practices (including a skin guide), which could also be sold at around $12.00 USD.

Let me know what you think.

I already have a blue book, but I'd buy another if Tom would sign it.

I plan on using a lot of the articles on the new features from Dream Makers section of the site. It'll save a lot of work.

Be sure to run that through the community to check so there isn't using any (unintentional) abuses (I know there are some examples in there... or was it the DM Ref?... that shows usr abuse).

Having a PDF (or HTML) version done before having it ready for printing to show off is a good idea... maybe start a topic in the forum if you get stuck on a chapter about something?

Some chapters that can be placed in may be about the new 3D sound system and interfaces (as mentioned previously). Though I suppose you can use Lummox JR's article on that for that chapter, with some side comments to make things easier for people to understand.

When you say a bunch, how many do you actually mean? Get those signed by the entire BYOND staff and you have yourself a bunch of collectibles!

I'm doing a lot of modifications to the book myself, for example the 'figures' will be in neat little boxes.

I might even make code examples in sorta grey boxes too.

If I could get a volunteer to help update a few chapters to be more up to date, maybe a new chapter on interfaces and some of the new procs (such as better mouse support and new icon procs, even a little bit on medals and such) that'd make the whole process a lot easier.

Personally I'll probably buy it regardless, but an updated book would be amazing.

I suggest if you do a reprint that you include some of the best DreamMaker articles, so that it's more up to speed.

I have talked to Tom about BYOND Merchandising and he has given me the authority to sell BYOND branded products on BYOND's behalf.

I do too, but I don't have the knowledge of DM that'll allow me to either re-write or update the BYOND Guide to the acceptable standard. Someone like Lummox JR or another guru will have to do it.

I assume you've already talked to Tom about this? Otherwise BYOND they might sue. :)
