Along The Tech Tree (April 12, 2007)
I need to add the date or something to these. It looks like there are no new updates on BYOND's game page when I use the same title in multiple blog posts.
Meanwhile, it's either a slow guild news week or people have been more secretive about games in development.
Meanwhile, it's either a slow guild news week or people have been more secretive about games in development.
- Nobody has volunteered to be an event organizer for BYOND Strategy. The want ad was phrased in the form of a "revolt against my tyranny" in both the event section and the last blog post. I'm really not comfortable being both a content provider and an event organizer. I don't think others should be comfortable with the possible abuse either. If I can't get a system which can keep itself in check then I'd rather switch to advertising multiple developer-run events and maybe randomly hosting a few unscheduled games... Meanwhile, I really am hosting StarScurrier tomorrow at 9PM EDT so get ticked off already!
- Last week's Exploder tournament started early, ended early, and was successful enough to spawn a permanent server and the promise of monthly tournaments. Read all about it here.
- Yorae and Vito Stolidus announced that they are working on separate turn-based strategy games in this Design Philosophy thread. It's not much to go on, but the main reason I started writing this wanna-be column was to promote game development within the guild. (Besides, slooooow news week.) Of course, if you're someone that said you'd lose your motivation if such an announcement was made, then I'll just make you feel uncomfortable with a vague reference that nobody else will understand. ;)
- Woohoo! A post from Deadly Waters developer, Justin Knight, on bug fixes. That's sort of news with the seemingly random hosting schedule, right? Right? I don't know. I'm seriously asking. The game is a mystery to me.
- After seeing someone host PathWrath for what couldn't have been more than a few minutes, I wondered if it was possibly because the host was using Dream Daemon and could not figure out how to start a game. I posted how to do so here. The same should apply for StarScurry.
- Update: Whoah! An actual news item! Junk Metal, by Calus CoRPS, has been submitted to BYOND Strategy and approved. The game features robot battling with customizable AI. It also makes me remember the fact I never beat Carnage Heart, but I'll forgive it. ;)
Get publicity for yourself and the guild. Tell us what games are being worked on for inclusion in BYOND Strategy.

> For the curious, I popped into a Deadly Waters session last week. I caught the end goal of one game and the start of another. Mind you, I didn't play. (Actually, I may have held the game up a bit.) However, the cooperative simulation aspects combined with an end goal make me think the game fits BYOND Strategy at the moment.
Joshua Ventresca>> AC, you play this before?
OOC: Twerty>> o_O
OOC: Hephaestus>> It is still sick and wrong to make fun of dead men
OOC: Editor Justin Knight: ACWraith happens to pwn noobs.
OOC: Hephaestus>> You heartless bastard
OOC: ACWraith>> Never. I'm just making sure the guild is the right one.
Autostart reset! Game WILL autostart.
OOC: Bobthehobo>> lol
Autostart overridden! Game will NOT autostart.
OOC: Editor Justin Knight: Do you agree with that statement, AC?
OOC: Twerty>> AC has to take training, though, doesn't he...?
OOC: ACWraith>> That I'm a heartless bastard? =)
OOC: Editor Justin Knight: That you pwn noobs.
OOC: Twerty>> You better hurry, Wraith! :o
OOC: Bobthehobo>> Heartless bastard was directed at me :P
Heinz Willhelm has changed the game mode to Budget Cut!
OOC: ACWraith>> So it's a game with a set goal and cooperative gameplay?
OOC: Hephaestus>> >.>
OOC: Editor Justin Knight: Quite.
OOC: Twerty>> Yep yep yep.
OOC: Twerty>> Well. Most the time...
OOC: Editor Justin Knight: Answer the question, though.
OOC: ACWraith>> Cool. Seems fine then. =)
OOC: Twerty>> As I fied the leak in Torpedo Bay 2... I got the weirdest image.
OOC: Twerty>> Fixed*
OOC: Hephaestus>> Besides the times we have break dancing tournaments in zone 4
OOC: ACWraith>> I own everything and nothing. It's my fooldom! ;) Bye
ACWraith left!
That was the entirety of ACWraith's visit to Deadly Waters. On a serious note, I've honestly always regarded DW more of a strategy game than an RPG. Sure, you can advance through the ranks, but it really takes some extra know-how, tactics, and strategy to be a great officer that can handle any situation.

Right... so Deadly Waters nearly inhabited the ranks with the plethora of non-anime RPGs in BYOND.

Mind you, my random hosting comment was not intended as a criticism. It's just one of the games in BYOND Strategy that leaves me clueless. (Granted, that's usually due to a lack of in-game help files.)
GAH! I wish I had used that post. I should sneak it into this week's Tech Tree along with the late Junk Metal addition. ;)

I definitely do not wish it to be removed from BYOND Strategy. It's a submarine simulation game that has RPG elements. Aside from skill points, none of the RPG elements have any major effect on game play. Does a game like that have a place in BYOND Strategy?
The game has a unique perspective really... playing the role of a crew member of a U.S. attack submarine, instead of just ordering it around with an outside view of it. I honestly don't know where to place it myself.
Regarding role playing... if you think imagining yourself as a submariner and thinking, talking, and acting accordingly is role playing, you've got that right. However, most people grossly inflate the game to be some haven for role-players. This can be good to get dedicated, mature fans of the game, but many new players do not talk (over the intercom) or role play(even though both are described in basic training). The game does not offer character development aside from a name, rank and job preference.
As for that post you linked to... that's a pretty strange topic to link to. http://z13.invisionfree.com/Deadly_Waters/ index.php?showtopic=51&st=45last
was posted before that, and is in the news section. I was just replying to Revo's post there. That topic is my dev log(that I update, even though not right away all the time).

Honestly, I can't remember if I had anything to do with that particular game's placement. However, I might have mentioned something when the top few hundred games were being sorted.
