Its nearly 4 years of Wargames on BYOND, so I thought I'd celebrate by updating Wargames 2. Yes, I know its been a long time since that has had a mention! I'm just tiding it up now, preparing it for its Beta D release; which I intend to put up for download in the next few days.
Its major addition from last time will be alliances, which will be a lot more complicated than in Wargames 1 to reflect the nature of the sequel. Wargames 2 is designed to be more about communication between players, supply lines and taking advantage of the terrain; and that means even your alliance messages will have to be closely guarded to prevent enemies from capturing it.
Depending on your tech level, you might have to send a messenger all the way to your alliance members capital, or perhaps a carrier pigeon could get there faster? Later in the game, you'll be able to send messages through near-instantly via radio or landlines, won't that be cool!
So that leaves me pondering, should world say also be constricted? That is what the poll here is for, I'm interested in your views. I have four options:
1) Keep it the same, instant. Nothing wrong with this.
2) Slight delay. Make it so there is a slight delay sending messages, but everyone still receives it at the same time.
3) Delay depending on distance. That is, a country right next to you would get it pretty much instantly, but the other side of the map won't receive it till last.
4) The same as what I've described above for alliance messages, depending on tech level, could be slow, could be quick.

The way I thought about it, alliance and private messaging would be through units for early techs, and for landlines it'll be direct connections (which has to be built first, I'll probably allow automation so you don't get too distracted from any conflicts your in), and radio would be some form of frequency. All forms would be able to be captured (with the result of the unit forms not even reaching its destination, and lines can be cut if you wanted).
For world say, I'd probably use neutral versions of each which can't be killed. The highest form possible would be used to communicate to each nation. Then again, your right, I might get rid of it after all! |
I don't think there should even be a world say. If a player wanted to they might be able to use a single radio frequency to communicate with all players on that frequency, but other than that communication should be done from player to player, not from player to world. That kind of defeats the purpose of even having carrier pigeons and radios, doesn't it?
