New York Times says murdering civilians is "logical"
"Israel’s counterstrategy was to use its Air Force to pummel Hezbollah and, while not directly targeting the Lebanese civilians with whom Hezbollah was intertwined, to inflict substantial property damage and collateral casualties on Lebanon at large. It was not pretty, but it was logical. Israel basically said that when dealing with a nonstate actor, Hezbollah, nested among civilians, the only long-term source of deterrence was to exact enough pain on the civilians — the families and employers of the militants — to restrain Hezbollah in the future."
And yet my community is still continually attacked for the action of individuals, it is "logical" for state military to do the same thing. Property damage which was seen as "logical" included blowing up a toilet paper factory and a power plant which resulted in oil spillage right down the Lebanese and Israeli coast, along with basic road infrastructure and bridges. Collateral casualties included the bombing and littering with cluster bombs of agricultural fields and school playgrounds, as well as residential areas in several Lebanese towns and cities.
The main Druze party which is considered a bellweather party in the country; which used to be part of the Government and pro-Israeli and anti-Syria broke away and has since praised Hezbollah for defending Lebanon from foreign aggression. The Lebanese Government did nothing during the conflict yet celebrated victory over beating down rioters in one of the refugee camps a month later which were complaining about the right to work. Many Arab countries refuse Palestinian refugees the right to work and have expressed a want to remove them, some having been established 60 years ago and more during the events of the '67 war. Iraqi refugees since 2003 are often turned away and are often deported if caught.
